Will AI Take Your Job? What the Numbers Actually Say
The Fear Behind the Headlines
Every few weeks, another headline claims that artificial intelligence is about to replace millions of jobs. It is an unsettling thought, whether you are a recent graduate or well into your career. Instead of reacting to the headlines alone, it is worth looking at what the research actually shows, because the picture is more balanced than most alarming claims suggest.
What the Sri Lankan Data Actually Shows
A 2025 study by Sri Lanka's Institute of Policy Studies, using International Labour Organization methodology, found that around 22.8 percent of the country's employed population, roughly 1.83 million workers, are in occupations exposed to generative AI (Daily Mirror, 2026a). This sounds concerning, but exposure does not mean elimination. It means part of a job's tasks could be assisted or changed by AI, not that the role disappears. The exposure falls most heavily on professional and office-based positions, the roles once seen as the safest route to career growth.
The Jobs Most at Risk, and the Ones Set to Grow
Clerical and entry-level administrative work is the clearest exception. Local analysts project demand for these roles could fall by 40 to 50 percent as government digitisation and generative AI reduce the need for typists, data clerks, and basic support staff (Daily Mirror, 2026b). Other sectors, meanwhile, are expected to grow. Caregiving and health-related roles are forecast to expand as the population ages, and renewable energy projects are creating steady demand for engineers, areas where human judgement is harder to automate.
A Global Pattern, Not Just a Local One
This pattern extends well beyond Sri Lanka. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates 92 million jobs will be displaced globally by 2030, while 170 million new roles will be created, a net gain of 78 million jobs worldwide (World Economic Forum, 2025). The report also expects 39 percent of core workplace skills to change by 2030, suggesting that adjustment, not job loss alone, is the real challenge ahead.
How Sri Lanka Compares to the Rest of the Region
The World Bank's most recent South Asia Development Update adds useful regional context. It finds Sri Lanka has one of the highest levels of AI exposure in South Asia, reflecting its skilled workforce, and notes that jobs requiring AI skills already command a wage premium of close to 30 percent (World Bank, 2025). However, it also cautions that Sri Lanka ranks low on AI-human complementarity, meaning more jobs could be displaced if adoption outpaces workforce training.
The Bottom Line
Taken together, the numbers point to a fair conclusion. AI is unlikely to eliminate work altogether, but it is steadily reshaping which tasks matter most. The safer response is not to fear the technology itself, but to prepare for the parts of a job most likely to change.

DeleteThis article is really interesting. It came out at the right time. I think Artificial Intelligence is changing the job market a lot. I do not think the biggest problem is that Artificial Intelligence is taking people's jobs. The bigger problem is that the workforce needs to adapt to all these changes. If we look at what happened in the past, we can see that new technology eliminates some jobs but also creates new ones that require different skills. So companies should not just use Artificial Intelligence; they should also help their employees learn things, get new skills, and get better at what they do. I believe that the companies that use Artificial Intelligence and also use the ideas of their employees and their ability to think critically and understand people's feelings will be the most successful in the long run. They will do better than companies that just rely on machines to do everything. Artificial Intelligence is a tool, but it is not the only thing that companies should focus on. The companies that find a way to combine Artificial Intelligence with the skills and abilities of their employees, like creativity and emotional intelligence, will be the ones that succeed.

Organisations should identify which tasks are likely to be automated, which tasks can be supported by AI and which responsibilities still require human judgement, creativity, empathy and accountability.
